Hi Pete, I believe there was a change 1/2 way through 1976.
I am pretty sure that 76 1/2, with VIN 216 2078 000 or later will accept Vanagon seats. Our 77 and 78 both can use them, as the 78 has them and I have tried them in our 77. 3

Hi Mike, we used the Bus Depot one.
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=352000 on our 78 bus and my brothers 78 westy. Seems like good quality, pretty thick metal. Should last a good long time. On my brothers, we needed to spread out the 2 ends that connect to the heater boxes on the muffler about 1/2 inch in order to get them to line up properly in order to bolt them on, but other than that, works great and runs nice and quiet. All in all, very happy with both. 4

You are looking for the one I am. It runs from the diverter on the right side of the bus, back to the vent under the rear bench seat on a westfalia I believe.
I know our 77 has this hose, but I believe that my brother's 78 does not have this hose, they eliminated it for some reason. I have heard negative things about using PVC due to the potential high temps and heating up the PVC too much where it starts to put bad things in the warm air coming out the vents. As much as it would be easy to say "just find an aircraft grade silicone tube", I know that it is very expensive to do it that way. It certainly would work well and last a while, but tough to put that kind of money out for me right now. Especially since the bus is a late spring through early fall vehicle for us. If you find the original type paper tube, please share! Thanks! PS, the picture you have up above doesn't have the hose you are looking for, since that picture is for a straight bus, not camper. The one you need comes off the diverter on the right. In the picture it goes right to the heat supplier that would go under the middle seat in a passenger bus. 5

We all had a great time this weekend, as we always do, at WRW. Hard to believe we have been to 5 of them now!
This year was hot but nothing like last year! We were a bit delayed by kids, so we didn't get up there until Sat. AM and only stayed one night, but as we were driving home it sure didn't seem like it was a short campout. We were able to do 2 trips down the river from the bridge and floated into the regatta about 5 minutes late on our first trip. We saw the whole start and watched everyone have a great time. We met some new folks, and really love these events for checking out everyone elses set ups to get ideas for our bus. My brothers new to him 78 Westy ran flawlessly in its first time on the road in about 5 years after we have refurbished it from a mouse infested, neglected bus back to it's beautiful Champagne Edition self. They got all the way back to Portland, ME as well, without our escort without any problems as well. A very sucessful weekend in every respect. Jeff and Michelle, we loved seeing the Bus Depot tent and seeing how you guys do it with three kids gives us inspiration for doing it with our 3 as they get older! It was great to meet you guys. Franck and Natalie, it was fun to camp next to you guys with the little guy. I hope your trip back to Montreal is fun and uneventful. There were also 2 couples from Canada, New Brunswick I believe who were great in letting us compare awnings and gave me quite the itinerary for when we finally make the long road trip to the Maritimes. Jim, always fun to see your bus loaded with people and tubes! Joe, I am sorry that we didn't' get to catch up other than in passing going toward the potluck. I really wanted to check out your new hightop. Hopefully we will cross paths soon. Our kids have not stopped playing with all the little busses and bugs that they won at the raffle. We doubled our VW matchbox size collection this weekend! Nevin and Sue, great job as always, and we can't wait until next year! Thanks again! Jeremy, Jessica, Christina, Trevor, Amber 6

We are planning on making the trip down 190-290-395 to New London for an early afternoon ferry.
Will be our first camping trip to LI. Can't wait! About how much time does it take to get from Orient to the campground? 7

Joe, I think I have a couple in the parts stash. I can't remember if they all work, but I will bring what I can find and maybe we can figure out how to test them there?
See you Friday Jeremy 8

We put an AVP rebuilt longblock into our 78 10 years ago now....Worked out really well.
What's wrong with the engine that makes you say it needs to be rebuilt? Are you handy working on the bus? Pulling the engine and doing a top end rebuild, pistons/cylinders and new heads is not a terribly hard job, just time consuming. I had never done it before but felt up for it and did our 77 engine a few years ago. New P/C and Heads will run you about $600-800 for decent ones, not the top of the line, but decent, and not GEX quality! Then it's just your time. Good luck! 9

Hi Jim, that's what I am thinking, but have one question about doing this. Did you drill the holes and then take the firewall off and put the bolts down through and then reach in and attach the nuts from below with a good sized washer or 2? That's what I am picturing...... 10
Bay window concerns / Putting 74 Westy full width seat into 77 bus?« on: December 13, 2009, 03:28:59 PM »
Anyone done this?
We have #3 on the way, so next summer we need to figure out how to get all 5 of us in the 77. I have a full width Westy seat from a 74 bus that I am thinking I could put in, if I take the refridgerator unit out. Any hints or suggestions to pass along? My main concern is how to attach the bench seat on the drivers side. Do you take out the firewall and drill a hole and put a bolt through the seat bracket and just reach in with a nut to bolt it in? Any help and/or suggestions appreciated. 11

Our 78 came to us with dual Weber 40's, which also came with the regulator you describe. It has a little dial on the top of it?
Since then, we have taken the carbs off and pieced together the fuel injection system to take it back to stock. It runs so much better and starts right up, no more pumping the gas pedal or having to hold it at a higher RPM to get it warmed up. Short answers for you: #1 TRUE #2 not sure someone else will have to help you. Where are you located? 12
Where do you like to go Camping? / Cape Cod Camping« on: July 27, 2008, 10:39:25 PM »
We just got back from camping on Cape Cod this weekend. We went down on Friday morning and camped at Shawme-Crowell State Park in Sandwich, MA.
It is a typical state park, nice wooded sites, no hookups, but hot showers (free!) and decent bathrooms. This place is right on the cape. You just have to battle the traffic to get over the bridge and you are basically there! It doesn't get the press of Nickerson out in Brewster (I think), but it was great and as a MA state resident it was $12 a night. $14 for out of state. It took us 50 minutes to get out to the Cape Cod National Seashore visitor center and the beach at Marconi was great! You can take the dogs on the beach on the national seashore as long as they are on a leash. Regardless, the campground is a great alternative to the RV Resorts if you are looking for more rustic camping. That's about it. Hope it helps someone. Oh, one more thing, they are open year round! You can camp or rent a yurt. Thought that could be fun in February! Jeremy 13

Bus Blog / Emblems/Scripts for the back of your bus« on: March 31, 2008, 11:54:10 PM »
I came across this thread and thought some of you might be interested....
http://http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtopic.php?t=3583 I could picture some folks having him make up some LIMBO scripts for the back of our busses. Perhaps someone might be interested in buying a quantity and selling them in the LimboMart? I have not affiliation, just thought it's a cool thing that he did. 15

I liked that show alot. She toured with John prine a bunch in the late 90's early 00's I think. I love listening to John Prine as well. It's surprising to me how many people never heard of him. Glad to see there's some appreciation for his stuff on here. When he and Steve Goodman got together it was great too!
