Memorial Day Weekend- Jim Thorpe PA
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:14:13 PM »
Loose gathering of displaced campers (due to cancellation of Westies in the Woods!) are planning to gather at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Any interested parties, please contact me with your email address to forward the details. I need to know how many people are interested by Feb 1st so I can hold our sites for afew weeks to give everyone time to make their reservations directly with the park. Campgrounds are filling up fast for that weekend! (This is the weekend after Granny Grose's and YES...we are INSANE!!! hahaha)   missnken@dejazzd.com

BUMPING WITH UPDATE!

http://www.carboncounty/park

Here's an update on our little Memorial Day campout in PA if anyone is interested, we'd love to have you!   JIM THORPE, PA

I'm SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!!  I just paid deposit for our group site (A) for 3 nights...FRI 22nd, SAT 23rd and SUN 24th.  No one needs to call in......I will provide them with a roster of all our people upon check in.  PRICE (and this is the BEST PART!!!) is only $4/person per NIGHT!!!!! WOO HOO>...not sure what this guy was smoking compared to when I talked to him months ago when he told me it was $32/night each family!!!! BUT WE'LL TAKE IT!!!!!  :)  ALSO....he originally told me you have to pay for all 3 nights....now he says that isn't so...you only pay for the nights you stay.  (Of course, my deposit was for 10 people per night, and I'm sure I won't get refunded if we don't cover the 10 people each night....)    OUr area will accommodate up to 50 or 60 people, so we don't have to worry about last minute additions, but we will be in a 'tent area' so bus parking may get tight if there is alot of us.

BOAT INFO:  If your Canoe/Kayak has a PA registration number...you are golden.  If you don't have that...you will need to purchase (or already have) a launch permit issued by PA FISH AND BOAT (standard for gov't parks) and you can buy it from them when you get there:  $10/yr or $18/2 yrs plus $2 county fee.  Must pay by CHECK or MONEYORDER ONLY  NO CASH.  They do rent boats at the day use area through a local outfitter.

Anyway...SO EXCITED it's going to be cheaper than we originally thought!!!  Please email me if you will be coming so I can start the ROSTER @ missnken@dejazzd.com.  Kenny took off that Friday so we should be able to get up there at a reasonable time as we will probably have to be the ones checking in for the group.

Any questions, just ask!

Malissa

Hey all....just to let you know...looks like the weekend is calling for some rain again....Kenny just went to Harbor Freight and bought a bunch of tarps for our BIG TOP.

Pulled some important info off the website for reference:

CHECK IN: 1:00 PM, CHECK OUT: 12:00 noon  (with or without Kenny, I will plan to be there around 1:00 pm on Friday….it looks like my band isn’t going to march in the parade Monday morning, but we are still playing the ceremony at 11:00 in Reading, so I will most likely bug out early Monday and would appreciate if anyone still there will help Kenny out!!!!)

No pets are allowed in the campground.
No alcoholic beverages permitted. (please be INCOGNITO...I think if it's on the DL we'll be ok. I don't suspect they will check our coolers, but anything is possible so pack to be stealthy)
Must use night entrance between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.
DAY VISITORS:
Visiting hours are from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Visitors must pay daily admission fee during the in-season. Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. until 8:30 a.m.
Bears frequently visit the park please secure food and garbage.
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS
Water is available at afew locations around the campground....bring your jugs or bring your own water. NO ELECTRIC at our sites. PRIMITIVE.

Please check the park's website for maps, directions and additional information. Bring wood if you can! We are packing dinners to share. Please feel free to do the same and we'll all just share the wealth!

I think we will be getting a nice group as long as the weather doesn't chase everyone away! See you all FRIDAY or at some point over the weekend!

If you are planning on coming and you haven't talked to me, please shoot me a message so we can plan accordingly for parking and such!!!  THANKS!  Malissa

Had a blast!

We had a great time at Jim Thorpe this weekend and are looking forward to making it an annual affair!  The park is shaded and gorgeous with beach and boat rentals within walking distance of our camp.  We had 10 buses.  Everyone enjoyed the area activites with some disappearing for biking, shopping in town and the Lehigh River whitewater release, coincidentally going on the same weekend.  The rangers were great and even stopped by to hang out and discuss Diesel Jim's bus.  The storms rolling through the area over the weekend were heard, but we only had slight spritzing in our camp....so we couldn't have asked for a better weekend!  Thanks everyone who came from near and far!  We had a blast!
