Heater fan (Blower)

My fan cuts out after a little while (minutes) of running.  Does not seem to matter what speed, but if you change speeds, it may run a bit longer.

I have learned that there is a resistor pack that that controls current to the fan to control speed, but high speed is supposedly "straight through"  with no added resistance.  Any ides, switch itself?

I have to pull the dash to inspect, likely replace the heater core, so I'd like to solve this as the same time,

Van is an 86 - no AC.

I think I saw a post on The Samba about lubricating the squirrel cage fan motor by removing the front grill,  drilling a small hole in the body and squirting some lube in it.

my fan died this summer. how big a project is removing the dash? Bently manual doesn't give me any information.

This year, I've done one and have 2 more to go.  It's not as bad as I thought; but the dash comes out, electrics hang, and perhaps the hardest part is to split the plastic 'welds' from the housing. Plastic glue it back and clamp.  Lube it up good or get a replacement.

Someone suggested getting a used blower and housing, going through the entire thing, installing the new heater core and then to a swap once the old one was out.  I'm on the fence, because the "new" blower might not be any better then the one I have!  

But it does cut down on the time between dismantle and install.  I don;t use the van in the winter, but with limited time and no garage, I'm afraid by the time I put it together, I'll forget what went where! LOL!

Has anyone seen the price of a front heater core - when you can find one.  Basically $300 new.  If only as cheap as the rear core.  I saw a post where someone is fitting a much smaller Ford Core for $50, but it is 1/2 the size.  

I've got one on back order at BusDepot, but anyone know of an alternative, let me know.

i am checking on a used heater assembly. if i can get it i'll let you know if the core looks good. i just need the fan.

No rear core won't fit in front.  Too bad rear core is as low as $65!

I canceled the Bus Depot one (after calling to make sure it was OK, I'm sure they have a waiting list for these anyways) and I will order an all metal one from Van-Cafe.

Glad you found a source. got to the place i saw a complete front heater assembly and it was gone. and i still need a blower motor.

Got the Van Cafe one today - all metal, looks good!  Might be a few months before it finds the way into the van - it's covered with snow now!

I have the beginnings of a fan noise. Hopefully you post the details of your replacement steps for us to learn from. If it's anything like my old Audi, the service manual steps can be shortcut-ted with an easier alternative method.
