I have an '87 syncro weekender - it has the 2 batteries under the driver's and passenger seats. How hard is it to change over to the swivel seats?

You'll need the swivel tracks and then a steel plate needs to be welded in to mount the swivel tracks to.

I just pulled a swivel seat base out of a van in a junk yard. It's a real job when you are not allowed acess to AC current or torches!
Now I see why people charge so much for these things!

I just got it, so I have not gotten to the weld it in phase.

One thing to keep in mind, is that the swivel seat base does raise the seating position. Westies actually had a slightly lower seat design - this became apparent when I installed non-Westy seats in my ex-westy! Luckily I'm 6'2", so it wasn;t a problem, but shorter passengers did note the high passenger seat.

My current plan is to only install the passenger side swivel, I might pull the other swivel some day (if it is still in the junk yard) to keep on hand for the driver's seat. :-/

But I never did find the swivel drivers' seat much use in my old Westy and it was a pain with arm rests and steering wheel to swivel - there are those that may disagree -just my $0.02.

John R

that was kind of my plan - just do the passenger side for now - having a problem finding somebody in Minneapolis who knows how it's supposed to be done.
I asked the guy I bought the swivels from about changes in the seat heights and stuff - he says it's not an issue.

I'd agree the changes in height is not an issue, but the seats will be taller. Maybe is was a bigger change on my old van as the 81 had pretty low worn seats.

Since I cut my swivel out with most of the original seat track still attached, I could photograph and try and upload to the Photo album - or send me your e-mail and I'll send direct.

That way you can see the factory welds. Else, if you know someone with a Westy, slide the seat off the tracks, unbolt the top half of the swivle (4 nuts) and remove that, you'll have to turn it slightly to remove the trip lever. Then you can see where and how the bottom part of the swivel is welded to the original seat tracks.

Let me know if you need the picure.
John
