Looking for a good VW shop in NYC or NJ
« on: June 02, 2009, 07:18:55 PM »
Hey folks,

I am new to this site and appreciate having a place to post a question and soak up some info. Hopefully I can return the favor down the road. I just bought a '73 Bay Window that needs engine and brake work. That is to say that it came with a replacement engine that needs to be installed and from what I understand at least a master cylinder needs to be fixed. There are some other minor mechanical items that need work but I'm hoping to do them myself. Going and stopping are better off overseen by someone with more talent than me. Which brings me to my question. I live on Staten Island, NY and was wondering if anyone could recommend a knowledgeable VW Bus mechanic in NYC or in central NJ. I have had several VW's and currently own an old Bug that I nursed back to health, but I am new to the Bus side of the affliction. Any help that can be offered would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hey VeeDubGuy; I know you asked for NYC or NJ based, so Ill throw a couple at you...

Foreign Car Works in Bound Brook NJ is a big sponsor of the Central Jersey VW society, and operates an almost exclusively to an aircooled clientel.
247 W Union, Bound Brook, NJ 08805 • 732-805-0907

GT Imports is in Massapequa (about 30 min East of NYC) While its not NYC, Tony is VERY well versed in ACVWs and if nothing more than a good place to get the bus up and running so that you can have a good, safe base to work from and learn off of then great. He has worked on all (6) of my VWs since I was 18 (soon to be 24) he is a bit more expensive than the average mechanic (although not astronomically so) but his experiance and knowing that your bus isnt leaving only to come back 100 miles later is well worth it.

Gene's Volksworld
Gene is a one man show, and ONLY works on VWs (90% of which are of the aircooled vintage Id guesstimate) He's in Freeport, (also about 25 min East of NYC) He is fairly priced, and knows his way in out and around anything the VWs Sometimes

Mr. Blue,

Thank you very much for your speedy and thorough reply. It's always great when you can go on a recommendation, especially when it's someone dedicated to the type of vehicle that you have. As I said in my previous post, I really appreciate this site and the forums. I will certainly be following the threads and participating where I can.

Regards.
