In a month or two I'm going to put a 85 westy pop-top onto an 89 vanagon. Anyone out there attempted such a thing? I'm looking for any advice I can get along the way.

I put a hightop on my 78, my advice is do not use a sawzall to cut the hole, buy the expensive Bosch jigsaw blades for metal,I used at least 8 blades on mine, ( they snap easy) the roof metal is soft and thin, and the jigsaw will cut nicely and very easy thru it.

My husband put a pop top on our 1989 Carat afew years ago. There was a quickie synopsis in the Transporter we wrote maybe last fall or so? I had it documented pretty good with pics on a FMBC thread, but the webite has been down. If you have specific questions, please PM us!

There are a couple of ways to do this... cut a hole in the roof and slap the top over it. Easy and quick and it gives you the extra room for storage.
The other is more complicated and involves welding. A couple of people I know have done it this way. The best part is when its done and done right, you can't tell it didn't come from the factory that way. You'll be able to use the upper bunk for sleeping as well as storage.
You'll need to cut the roof at at the pillars and then match the new roof to the cuts and hope the doors and windows fit when done. This is the way I want to do it. Someday.
