Ready to get gas tank reseal kit installed - Last
« on: July 31, 2006, 10:22:35 AM »
I've read over all the notes files, have instructions from vanagain, and have read over the Bentley manual. A few last questions before having my mechanic (who works on foreign cars, but is not a VW specialist) do the work.

1. The kit I purchased (van-cafe) and others do not include the grommets or seals for the two expansion tanks. Is this because they rarely fail? Or?
This is especially confusing since the vanagain directions note: "Also when reinstalling the expansion tank lines remove the rubber grommet that seals them to the tank and pop this into the tank first while you have the tank out, then pop the lines into the tank."

2. One person I spoke with suggested that when reinstalling the cross-over tube, it is not necessary to place this over the coolant lines. Every article I read on the web has it re-installed over the coolant lines. Does it matter?

3. The Bentley manual noted to use a tool 2012A when removing / re-installing the fuel gauge expansion unit. While my mechanic does work on VW's and other foreign cars, I would guess he does not have this specific tool. What are the alternatives?

4. The Bentley manual noted one should test the system for leaks using US4487 after it is done.
- Is this done before reinstalling the gas tank?
- While this makes sense, I again doubt my mechanic has such a tool. What are the alternatives?

thanks
ok

Q 1 - yes they fail but the Kit don't come with them :(

Q 2- yes it is important to go over the coolant lines ,because they will rub on the lines

Q 3- a spanner wrench will work , DO NOT use channel locks ,slip joint plyers ,they will "cave" them in

Q 4- if the installment gose in with no major problems you dont need to to the test.

make sure your mech uses baby powder or a food grade silicone for the gromets , any spray from ordenary lubes will break down the rubber .

Before doing the tank get a set of tank straps ,they will break.

get 20ft of fuel injecton line and replace all the fuel hose.
at one time . incluide the injectors hoses. and make sure the are clamped at all joints
