Oil Leak on DG Waterboxer Engine
« on: September 01, 2006, 03:19:56 AM »
Hello All,

This is my first post. We own a 1984 UK Wedge Brick which has taken us all over Europe.

It has developed an oil leak from one of the pushrod tubes underneath the engine.

I looked at the manual and it seems that the head will have to come off to replace the tube. Is this correct?

Is a job like this DIYable or is it best left to a specialist? The gasket and cylinder liner arrangement are making me a little nervous.

Are there any other techniques available to repair a leaky tube rather than replacing it?

Thanks for your help!

Peter

You should be able to replace it with an adjustable replacement push rod tube. Bob Donalds at Boston Engine (www.bostonengine) gets some nice aluminum ones. They also come in plastic.

Using an adjustable replacement tube means you won't have to remove the head to replace them. You will have to remove the rocker arm assembly and pushrod to get the old pushrod tube out.

There should be someone in the UK that can supply you with replacement adjustable pushrod tubes.

volkswagen sells replacement telescopic push rod tubes for the waterboxer. Just so you don't have to remove the heads. Part number: 025-109-337. They are kinda expensive 78.20 USD list each. Cheaper than removing the head. Good luck.
